Why packing materials behave differently in a tropical climate

Most packing advice online is written for dry climates and quietly assumes a garage in autumn. Malaysia does not work that way. Mean relative humidity across Peninsular Malaysia sits in the 80s through most of the year, with daytime temperatures generally between 26°C and 33°C, and that changes three things.

Sealed plastic is the enemy, not the solution. Stretch film wrapped straight onto solid wood, leather or rattan holds moisture against the surface, and after two weeks in a warm lorry or a container it produces bloom on leather and swelling at joints. Our packers put a breathable layer between the item and the film every time.

Second, humid air can soften cartons. That is why we use 5-ply cartons for heavier items, especially when we need to stack them during transport. Third, we add desiccant to items with circuit boards, particularly for shipments travelling by container to Sabah or Sarawak.

What cannot be packed?

Some items cannot legally or safely travel in a household shipment, and it is better to know before the packers arrive than to have a carton opened at a port. We do not pack:

• gas cylinders, camping fuel, lighter fluid and matches
• petrol, diesel, engine oil and anything drained from a machine
• fireworks, ammunition and firearms
• opened food, perishables, and plants with soil
• loose lithium batteries and power banks removed from devices

On the road within Peninsular Malaysia the risk is fire and leakage in the lorry. On a shipment moving by air or sea to Sabah or Sarawak, these fall under the civil aviation and shipping dangerous goods rules and an undeclared item can hold the whole consignment. Our surveyor lists anything questionable at the survey so you can use it up, give it away or dispose of it beforehand.

Do you unpack at the destination?

Yes, and it is worth taking. Unpacking is quoted with the pack and covers placing goods in the rooms you nominate, reassembling the furniture we dismantled, and removing every carton, blanket and offcut of film from the property the same day. Without it, most households spend the following fortnight living around a wall of flattened boxes with nowhere to put them, since Klang Valley condominiums rarely allow bulk cardboard in the general refuse room.

Packing for offices and commercial moves

Office packing runs on a different clock: the work happens after hours or over a weekend so the business opens on Monday. We pack in labelled crates keyed to floor plans and desk numbers rather than generic cartons, prepare servers, switches and monitors individually, and keep filing in sealed archive boxes with a numbered manifest.
